What should I check before buying a used car privately?
A private sale can carry risks that are worth checking before you hand over a deposit or final payment.
Match the car to the evidence
Check the VIN or chassis number against the vehicle and paperwork, inspect the vehicle, and question inconsistencies in the listing, seller story, service history or condition. Consider an independent mechanical inspection where appropriate.
Do an official PPSR search
The Australian Government PPSR says its $2 online vehicle search can identify a security interest recorded against the vehicle and usually includes available written-off and stolen information. The official search requires the VIN or chassis number; a number plate alone is not enough.
Timing matters
PPSR guidance says the most up-to-date search is important. For buyer protection against security interests, its guidance refers to searching on the day of purchase or the day before. Keep the search certificate.
