How do I check if a Marketplace seller is a scam?
A convincing profile or listing is not proof that the seller or item is genuine. Check the transaction itself before sending money.
Check the seller and the item
Look at the seller's history, the age and consistency of the profile, the listing photos and description, and whether the price is unusually low. Search independently for the seller, business or product. Scamwatch warns that scammers can create fake profiles and ads even on legitimate marketplaces.
Inspect expensive items before paying
For big-ticket purchases, Scamwatch advises against paying before inspecting the product in person. Keep communication inside the marketplace where possible and use the platform's recommended secure payment methods.
Check who receives the money
If using PayID or bank transfer, check whether the account holder matches the person or business you believe you are paying. Be cautious if you are pushed toward unusual payment methods, several accounts or PayIDs, cryptocurrency, gift cards or an urgent deposit.
