Sender and reply-to
A familiar display name can hide an unrelated email address. Compare the sender, reply-to and claimed organisation.
Links and wording
Unexpected links, unusual domains, credential requests, threats and urgent instructions can justify extra verification.
Payment changes
Changed bank details or pressure to transfer money quickly deserve independent confirmation using contact details you already know are genuine.
What to do before acting
Do not open an unexpected attachment or suspicious link just to investigate it. If the message claims to come from a supplier, bank or business, contact that organisation independently rather than relying on the phone number or link inside the email.
